If you ever find yourself in a survival situation, always remember the first rule. DO NOT PANIC! Panic can lead you to make reckless choices that may lead to a bigger problem or could possibly end a life. No matter what the survival situation is, food, water and shelter should be your focus. Survival guides are excellent tools to use in order to help you survive – no matter where you are when disaster strikes. A useful survival guide will not only prepare you for a variety of settings, but also with the different skill sets needed in those different types of locations.
Once you have the information you need to survive, you can make it through short and long-term catastrophes. However, not every survival situation is the same. For example, making it through a survival situation in the desert is nowhere near the same as a survival situation in an urban setting. Another example might be the skill set and gear needed to survive in a forest versus surviving a hurricane or a Tsunami.
Using a survival guide will teach you that things happen when you least expect it and that you need to be prepared. Therefore, you should always have emergency gear/supplies available when driving through the desert. Of course, no one anticipates car trouble or that their sightseeing in the desert would result in them getting lost. However, it happens all the time. Before leaving home, you should bring with you: a hat, water, a mirror, matches, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and a blanket. Although it is extremely hot in the desert during the day, it can get very cold at night. So, the matches will provide a fire to keep you warm. If you are smart enough to stay by your car (which is recommended), you can always remove a tire and burn it, which makes plumes of smoke. Hopefully, the smoke will signal to others where you are and that you are in trouble. A mirror is extremely useful in signaling airplanes and helicopters during the day that may be looking for you. Just point the reflective side of the mirror toward the sky and use the sun’s powerful rays to attract the attention of rescuers.
Urban survival is a completely different type of survival all together because it requires a way of thinking that most modern-day people are not accustomed to. In developed countries, most people simply do not know what to do when societal rules completely break down after a disaster. Understanding that basic urban survival quickly turns into having food, water, and shelter will keep them alive. Survival guides that teach about urban survival concentrate on food storage, a way to cook the food they have stored, a water filter and/or water purification tablets, and masks to protect against any possible toxins, pollutants, chemicals, poisons, or biohazards in the air.
Surviving in the wilderness is a whole different experience than desert and urban survival. It all depends on the area of the wilderness you choose…or get stuck in. If possible, try to set up camp in an area away from game trails and water sources. The last thing you want to do in a survival situation is tangle with a bear, or wolverine, or some other large animal looking for a meal. However, it is not a bad idea to take a weapon with you into the wilderness for just such an occasion and to hunt game. You’ll also need a waterproof backpack, first aid kit, food bars, matches/fire starter, a compass, string, water purification tablets, and a parachute cloth or a one-man tent. Using a parachute cloth and string is a quick and easy way to make a shelter. Tie the string between two trees. Drape the parachute cloth over it and there’s your quick and easy shelter.
Survival guides that teach you how to survive in any emergency or disaster will give you the knowledge and self-confidence you need to get through any crisis alive. Just remember, DON’T PANIC! No matter what the disaster is, your focus is food, water, and shelter. An effective survival guide will help you to understand the necessary gear, the skills you will need, and what your course of action should be. Although the idea(s) of societal rules breaking down or having to wear a mask for fear of what is in the air, or getting lost in the desert can be terrifying, being prepared for such disasters does help bring peace to mind.
